Established in 1988, the school of art and design was originally consisted of three departments, namely, the Tourist Commodity Department, the Department of Arts and Crafts and the Department of visual arts. In 2016, it was renamed as the School of Art and Design upon the organizational adjustment.
In 1989, the school began to recruit students for the program of Tourism Arts and Crafts design and production, which is one of the earliest three disciplines in the university.
There are 10 majors or concentrations in the school. They are: the decorative art and design (concentration on tourist crafts design, art design, and jewelry design), decoration art design and environmental art design (concentration in interior design and landscape art design), film and television animation, multimedia design, art design (concentration in mural and environment decoration design, and city public art design).
From 2015 to 2017, three undergraduate programs were introduced: Arts and Crafts, Environmental Design and Visual Communication Design. At present there are about 1300 full-time students in the school. The annual employment rate of graduates is over 88% with the wide employment prospects.
The school has faculties with high professional ethnic and competence. Among the 76 staff members, 61 are full-time teachers, including 5 professors (a professor of second grade), 26 associate professors.
The school adheres to the goal of promoting specialties and advancing student employment, thus develops a "dual tutorial system" training mode by which the students practice while learning the theories under their tutors’ instructions. We will promote integration between industry and education and cooperation between enterprises and schools, to strengthen the professional ethnic and competence of our graduates.
The school focuses on discipline development.
In 2003, Decorative Art and Design major became a model program of teaching reform in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
In 2006, decorative and environmental art design major was enrolled the first batch of Excellent Profession in higher education institutions of Guangxi.
In 2008, the training base was appraised the provincial demonstration base.
In 2009, decorative art and design major became the Provincial key discipline.
In 2010, the education training base project, granted financial support from the Central Government, was later awarded as Guangxi Tourism Commodities R&D Base by the Regional Tourism Bureau. Professionals taught the Decorative Art Design got the Excellency Award at a provincial level."Tourism souvenir design”was awarded “Excellent Course of the Autonomous Region.
In 2011, the specialty of Decorative Art and Design was supported by provincial funds on for the integration of autonomous regions, specialties and courses. In the same year, the profession was certified by the World Tourism Organization.
In 2013, it was supported by the funds for Autonomous Region characteristic specialty projects.
In 2016, the discipline of Design Science was recognized the provincial key discipline.
“Research Center for National Featured Arts and Crafts”became a key research base for humanities and social sciences of higher education institutions in Guangxi.
In 2017, the school received the second prize of Guangxi Teaching Achievement.
In 2018, Arts and Crafts was supported by provincial funds for the integration of autonomous regions and demonstration base.
Arts and Design received top disciplines project and top subject by GLTU.
The school boosts a comprehensive and premium education and teaching laboratories.
The training center consists of a fiber dyeing studio, a ceramic laboratory, a comprehensive technology studio, a metal art studio, a jewelry studio, a soft decoration studio, a bamboo craft and art studio, a performance laboratory, a visual communication laboratory, an animation lab, a photography studio, and a Base for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Several research centers such as the Tourism Souvenir Development Base and the Guilin Tourism Commodity Research Institute were set up in the school.
The school has nearly 30 off-campus training bases, such as Guangxi Qinzhou Nixing Ceramics Co. Ltd., and Guilin Meibao Enterprise Management Co. etc.
The School of Art and Design is a board member of the Guangxi Arts and Crafts Association and a board member of the Guilin Arts and Crafts Association.
